Study Abroad Scholarships & Grants for Undergraduate Students

Regents International Study Grant
Eligibility Requirements:

·         Be a degree-seeking UNM undergraduate student

·         Be in good academic standing at UNM

·         Able to receive UNM credits or transfer credits for the international program

·         Demonstrate financial need

 

Student must be planning to participate in an approved, credit-bearing UNM study abroad program, such as international exchange, UNM platform program, consortia programs where UNM is a member of the consortium, programs run by New Mexico State University, or faculty-led international courses, intensive language study, independent study, international internships, service-learning programs, etc. Applications for programs less than four weeks in duration will be evaluated only if accompanied by a full program or course syllabus (not an itinerary) that outlines objectives and assessment procedures. If applicants are unsure whether or not a program is 'approved' they should come in and discuss it with a UNM Study Abroad staff member. Graduate and Non- Degree students are NOT eligible.

 

International Studies Institute Summer Scholarships 2010

William J. Cunningham International Public Service Scholarship

The ISI selection committee will award one year-long scholarship in the amount of $1300. Eligible applicants must be continuing undergraduate students at UNM with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who intend to prepare for a career in international public service. Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in Asian Studies.

 

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship - You must apply through an OIPS Advisor

Eligibility Requirements:

·         $5,000 for study in any country and any major

·         To be eligible you must be an undergraduate and currently receiving a Pell Grant

·         Non-traditional countries are given priority

 

DEADLINES 2010:

For study in fall 2010 or academic year 2010-11: April 6, 2010

For study in spring 2011: October 1, 2010

DAAD: German Academic Exchange Service

Eligibility Requirements:

·         Grants for study in Germany from two months to nine months

·         Study in any major

·         Must be a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student

·         Must be proficient in German

·         Application deadline mid-March

 

Boren Awards - You must apply through an OIPS Advisor

Eligibility Requirements:

·         Preference for study in Africa, East Asia and Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East,    South Asia, Latin America

·         Cannot be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, New Zealand or Australia

·         Freshman through graduate students eligible

·         Summer programs, one or two semester grants available

·         Grantees must commit to a period of working with a U.S. government agency or institution of higher education within 8 years after completing overseas study

These awards include David L. Boren Scholarships for undergraduate students and David L. Boren Fellowships for graduate students.  They provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. students to add an important international and language component to their educations. Boren Awards focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. Grants for overseas study related to geographical areas, languages and fields of study related to U.S. national security (includes some majors in sciences, business, computer science, health fields in addition to social sciences)

For Undergraduate Students Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange

Eligibility Requirements:

·         Full funding for 12 months in Germany, including intensive German language course, professional training in your field of study, a paid internship with a German company or organization, home stay with a German family

·         Undergraduates studying in business or technical field are eligible to apply

·         Prior knowledge of German language is helpful but not required

·         Deadline for applications: December 1

 

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships

Eligibility Requirements:

·         Full funding for two semesters of study abroad

·         Any major or country

·         Apply through your hometown Rotary Club

·         Application deadlines vary

 

Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan

Eligibility Requirements:

·         $2500 for one semester or $4000 full academic year

·         Any major

·         Japanese language study not a prerequisite

·         Application deadlines are in early April for Fall semester abroad, and early October for Spring semester abroad

**NEW Study Abroad Fellowships for UNM Undergraduate Students**


OIPS will offer two new fellowships to students studying abroad in 2010 as a supplement to the Regent’s International Study Grant.  No special application is required, although personal statements will be read with an eye towards the criteria outlined below. All applicants to Regents’ fellowships will be considered as candidates for these awards.

 

The John Smeltzer Award

The John Smeltzer Award will provide a small supplementary fellowship to a student applying to any international program whose interests and career goals exemplify a commitment to international study, experiential education abroad, and global understanding. Please inquire at OIPS for more information.

 

Benjamin Sacks Scholarships

Two Benjamin Sacks Endowed Scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate students for overseas study in 2010.  Preference will be given to students in UNM ‘platform’ programs or exchange programs.  Each recipient will be limited to a one-semester scholarship (although students on full-year exchange programs are also eligible).  Preference will be given to students focusing in European, British, or African history, but students from all fields are eligible.
